The
mission behind this project was to give unconventional directions from point
A to point B of some place. I gave the project a twist by giving directions
through my grandfathers life, using his major accomplishments as landmarks along
the way. This was a 3 step project. In the first part of the project I created
the 1st panel, seen at left, in QuarkXPress, using transparent
style typography, it contains my grandfathers major landmarks through his life
up to his death, it also contains a set of driving directions from his house
on Chancery St. to his burial lot in St. Johns Cemetery. Because through my
research I retrieved all my information via his 7 children, I decided to begin
my major land marking at the house he raised them in, rather than at his birth
place, although I do mark his birth, but then jump right to the house on Chancery
St. In the second part of this project I create another panel, seen at the right
of the 1st panel, mirroring the same info as the first, the only difference
is my use of opaque style typography. In Adobe
Photoshop I used the type as image to create a somewhat ghostly outline of his
profile. Since I never knew my grandfather, and am just piecing together an
image based on what my family has told me, this panel is sort of a pun. It is
in fact his image, solely made up from type containing information I've been
given from his children who are my aunts uncle and mother. In the 3rd piece,
the book, seen below the panels, I created the cover in opaque
style, using Adobe Photoshop, and the inside pages in transparent,
using both Photoshop and Quark. It follows the same pattern as the other 2 parts,
it is an accordion bind, the left hand pages contain the driving directions
with background images of landmarks along the way and the road itself, to give
the feel of driving to the grave in the cemetery from Chancery St. The right
hand pages contain quotes and pictures of each of his 7 children.
